Description:

Mesopotamian, Babylon, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. An elegant weight carved from a white stone and depicting an abstract rendering of a sleeping duck, with the duck's long beaked head turned back 180 degrees and resting upon its body. The Mesopotamians used sets of standard weights to conduct their business and set rigid penalities against individuals who used false weights. The weights themselves were typically made from marble and other hard stones. The most common form was a simple barrel shape; however, weights in the form of a duck like this example, were also popular. Size: 3.75" L x 1.875" H (9.5 cm x 4.8 cm)
