Description:

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. An elegant hammered-bronze pitcher boasting a distinctively Luristan form with a huge elongated spout that resembles the beak of a crane and decorative nodules surrounding the neck. The extreme narrowness of the spout suggests that the vessel was intended for the pouring of precious liquids that could only be released in minute quantities, perhaps treasured oils and fragrances used as part of religious rites. Size: 7.8" W x 3.4" H (19.8 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Doris Gottlieb Brickner and Dr. Manuel Gottlieb collection, acquired via descent, originally purchased in Amsterdam in 1969
