Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A cast-bronze axe head of unusual form bearing a paddle-shaped blade head that projects slightly upwards from the slender neck. The socketing shaft is comprised of 2 open cylindrical flanges that are engraved with an abstract eye on either side of the button-shaped knob. Layers of brown and green patina have formed across the weapon throughout centuries of environmental exposure. Size: 6.6" L x 0.8" W x 5.1" H (16.8 cm x 2 cm x 13 cm)

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection, purchased from Palmyra Heritage Gallery, New York, New York, USA, June 10, 2018, lot 170; ex-Rabi Soleymani estate, London, England, thence by descent
