Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

East Asia, South Korea (found near Seoul in 1957), ca. 8th to 14th century CE. A cast bronze mirror with a polished face, an ornate back, and a small, knobbed handle. The edges are scalloped, the back decorated with a scene that suggests floral motifs but is also abstract. Bronze mirrors with knobs appeared in the Chinese Han period and continued to be produced for centuries afterwards; the style spread to Korea and to Japan. However, unlike in China, Korean mirrors often have abstract geometric designs (as here) rather than figural ones, reflecting the influence of the Ordos tradition on Korea. Size: 4.25" W (10.8 cm)

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection; collected in Seoul, South Korea, in 1957 after a bombing exposed graves and washed this piece downhill
