Description:

East Asia, South Korea (found near Seoul in 1957), ca. 8th to 14th century CE. A cast bronze mirror with a polished face and an ornate back studded with a knobbed handle. The edges are rounded, the back decorated with repeated floral, vine, and leaf motifs. Bronze mirrors with knobs appeared in the Chinese Han period and continued to be produced for centuries afterwards; the style spread to Korea and to Japan. Korean mirrors were also influenced by the Ordos tradition and their motifs are easily distinguishable from Chinese or Japanese ones. Size: 4.25" W (10.8 cm)

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection; found near Seoul, Korea, in 1957 when bombs exposed graves and the mirror washed downhill
