Description:

East Asia, Japan, Early Jomon period, ca. 4000 BCE. An ancient hand-built urn with a deep, conical shape made using the coil method with a clay mixed with materials such as mica, fibers, and crushed shells. The corrugated and impressed surface is textually interesting and produced by pressing ropes or other material into the wet surface before firing. In fact, this enigmatic culture is named - "Jomon" which means "cord pattern" in Japanese. This type of pottery is some of the oldest ever made, and. the flattened base indicates that it is probably from the early Jomon period (5000 to 2500 BCE). Around the piece is a newer woven vegetal cord to demonstrate how this ancient piece may have once been carried and the corrugated surface proves a superior grip for holding straps in place. Size: 6" Diameter x 5" H (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm)
