Description:

Near East / Western Asia, Persia (Iran), Nishapur area, ca. 9th century to early 13th century CE. A fine glazed bowl with three abstract bird motifs in brown outline around the sloping interior sides of the bowl. Each bird has long strands of glaze that extend out behind its body, giving the impression of flight and movement. The body of this plate and others of its style are made of finely ground quartz mixed with clay; this created a white surface on which the artists could paint designs directly. The glaze is alkaline and would be poured over the clay. Manganese was used to create the underglaze design. Size: 9.2" W x 3.25" H (23.4 cm x 8.3 cm)
