Lot 48
Ancient Near East, the Levant, ca. 1st millennium BCE. Beautiful example of a simple, functional piece of ancient pottery. This is a deep well, iron-rich clay vessel with natural earth tones of a deep reddish brown. It has a bulbous body, flattened base for resting on a dirt floor, and a cylindrical loops handle. The rim flares out slightly for pouring; there are remains of tan pigment on the surface. An instantly recognizable item like this connects us to the daily life of people in the past. Size: 9.25" W x 10.75" H (23.5 cm x 27.3 cm)
Provenance: From the private collection Dr. WC, Hagen, acquired between 1980 and 1995.
