Ancient Near East, Southwestern Iran, Elamite culture, ca. 4th to 2nd millennium BCE. A hand-carved stone bowl exhibiting russet and cream hues. The flat-bottomed vessel features thick walls that culminate in a thin rim from which libations could be poured in ritual fashion. Libation vessels held religious and symbolic significance in Elamite society, serving as a conduit for communication with the divine through liquid offerings. They were used in communal gatherings and played a role in funeral and ancestral rites, reinforcing social bonds and cultural traditions. Additionally, these vessels often showcased artistic craftsmanship and could serve as symbols of wealth and status for elites. Size: 3.3" W x 2.125" H (8.4 cm x 5.4 cm)
