South Asia, India, possibly Dharanikota, Amaravati, Junnar, or Prathisthan, Satavahana Dynasty, ca. 2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE; Gupta Period, ca. 320 to 550 CE. A fine set of 2 hand-built pottery heads from 2 distinct Indian time periods. First is a Satavahana head of a female, perhaps belonging to a Bodhisattva, that is hand-carved from beige-hued sandstone and features an elaborate coiffure, almond-shaped eyes, large ears, and full lips curled into a smile. The more petite Gupta head is hand-built from pottery and features a male head with large ears, slender eyes, and an elaborate crown stretching across the brow. Size (Satavahana): 3" W x 2.4" H (7.6 cm x 6.1 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand; (Gupta): 1.5" W x 2.3" H (3.8 cm x 5.8 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired prior to 2000

  • Condition: Both heads are fragments of larger compositions as shown. Gupta head has losses to neckline and tip of nose, with softening to some finer details. Satavahana head has losses to back left side of head and areas of neckline, with light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Both heads have nice earthen deposits throughout.
