Description:

Northern Greece, Thrace, ca. 9th to 7th century BCE. Two fine pieces of ancient jewelry; an elegant torq (also torc) shaped from a thick piece of high quality 93.73% silver and a thin cuff band made from 95.81% silver (both sterling silver in today's standards). Neck torqs were beautiful signs of prestige and wealth from the European Iron Age through the Viking period, so-called from the Latin word "torques," meaning "to twist," because of their appearance. The cuff is a simple, a wire hammered into a slightly flattened band with a gap between the terminal ends. Size of torq: 5" Diameter x 0.25" W (12.7 cm x 0.6 cm); silver quality: 93.73% to 95.81%; combined weight: 93.1 grams
