Greece, Attica, Athens AR Tetradrachm, (17.2 grams), ca. 454 to 404 BCE. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet ornamented with three olive leaves above visor and spiral palmette on bowl, wearing round earring with central boss and pearl necklace, owl standing right with head facing; to left, crescent and olive sprig; all within incuse square. CP. Kroll 8; Dewing 1591-8; SNG Copenhagen 31. Size: 1.05" W (2.7 cm)

From the Getty Museum's description of their same coin: "Athenian 'Owls,' as they were called, were minted in Athens for over four hundred years, beginning in 512 [BCE] Although the style evolved, the coins retained the same basic design of Athena on the obverse and her patron owl on the reverse. This coin dates to the period just before 449 [BCE] when the production of owls increased exponentially to fund building projects and the Peloponnesian War."
