Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th to 1st century BCE. A wonderful ring of a petite size formed from 96% gold (equivalent to 22K+ gold) with a thick shank, wide shoulders, and an ovoid bezel. Within the bezel is a round-topped carnelian intaglio bearing an etched image of a standing male figure, perhaps Mercury based on the caduceus-style staff he holds as well as his tapered helmet. Though made for petite fingers, this is a superb example of wearable Greek artistry! Size (ring): 0.7" W x 0.8" H (1.8 cm x 2 cm); (intaglio): 0.45" L x 0.3" W (1.1 cm x 0.8 cm); quality of gold: 96% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 8.4 grams; US ring size 2.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-American collection, 1980s to 2000s; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, collected in the 1960s
