Description:

Pakistan/Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fascinating period of ancient art! While the Greeks "conquered" this part of the ancient world under Alexander the Great four centuries earlier and soon thereafter abandoned the region, their influence continued for centuries, with pockets today of fair-skinned "Greeks" existing in parts of this region. Gray schist sculpture of a seated nude, probably Atlas, who is commonly referenced in Gandharan art. He sits with legs spread, one hand on his thigh, one on his knee, long curly hair and beard. Size: 4"W x 4-1/4"H. Provenance: Ex-private New York collection acquired decades ago. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108527

  • Condition: Fragment of larger sculpture, but details quite crisp.
