Description:

Central Asia, Upper Pakistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 200 BCE to 100 CE (probably later in this period). Karosthi is an old Sanskrit-derived language from ancient Gandhara in what is upper Pakistan today. The inscription translates in part "Sigadhi … son of … sarma". A wonderful example of jewelry from ancient Gandhara. US ring size: 7. Size: intaglio measures .3" L x .375" W (0.8 cm x 1 cm); shank measures .75" in diameter (1.9 cm); gold quality: 35%, equivalent to 8K; total weight: 1.6 grams.

Provenance: private Dere Family Collection, New York City, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s - 2000s

  • Condition: The intaglio may have been larger prior to being chosen for this ring, but it is in generally excellent condition save minor surface wear. Gold setting dates later than the Gandharan period (likely antique) and has developed a nice warm patina.
