Description:

Ancient Central Europe, probably Germany, the Atlantic Bronze Age to Iron Age transition period, ca. 600 BCE. A beautiful cast-bronze axe head of a sturdy form with a flared vertical blade, a slight carination around the neck, twin lateral flanges with folded sides, and a protruding stop bar. An axe is defined as a "palstave" if it can be hafted using a forked wooden handle rather than one with a single tip. While most palstave axe heads have open-faced lateral hafting flanges, this example is rather rare based on the folded top and bottom peripheries which allow for a more-secure fit for the handle. Size: 7.625" L x 2.2" W (19.4 cm x 5.6 cm); 2.8" H (7.1 cm) on included custom stand.
