Description:

Central Europe, Bronze Age, ca. 1000 BCE. A fabulous pair of matching bronze armlets in mesmerizing spiraling forms, smoothed edges with a strong midrib, and the final spiral is thicker with a wrought twist texture, making for an attractive decorative effect and curled back termini loops. Both are crafted from a single continuous bronze piece making 13 rotations, and each has a gorgeous green patina that creates a truly elegant presentation! These were created most likely to be worn and buried with their owner as a prized possession. It is unclear if armbands like these were worn for actual physical protection; however, scholars have suggested that they had a ritual/religious protective purpose, and such jewelry are some of the most famous symbols of the Bronze Age in Europe. Size: 5" L x 3" Diameter (12.7 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York, New York, USA; ex-Munich art market, 2011; ex-private Vienna, Austria collection, 1980s
