Description:

Egypt, ca. 3rd-4th CE. The Coptic textiles are commonly linen or wool and use the colors red, blue, yellow, green, purple, black and brown. The dyes were derived from madder, indigo, wood, saffron, the murex shell, and the kermes insect. This handsome little textile piece has a silk matte and acid free mounting. Coptic textiles are very collectible as they are some of the earliest textiles. Their survival in such wonderful condition is due to the Egyptian custom of burying them with their dead and the extreme dryness of the Egyptian climate. 7 1/4" square.

Provenance: ex-old French collection, acquired by present owner in England in the 1960's.
