Description:

Egypt, ca. 4th - 5th century CE. This rare Coptic textile tunic was cut down in size for a child to wear in ancient times and is a most interesting and rare example of a full Coptic textile garment. The Coptics were the Christian descendants of the ancient Egyptians. The emergence of the Coptic art coincided with the decline of the Roman Empire and corresponded with the reemergence of native art in Egypt. The linen is banded with wool with upright figures and animals. The wooden frame with linen background displays the piece and can be hung on a wall to be fully appreciated. Coptic textiles are some of the only examples of ancient textiles to have survived since they come from the dry Egyptian desert climate. Framed: 36 1/2" x 27" x 1 1/2".
