Description:

Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom to Late Dynastic Period, 12th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1991 to 332 BCE. An alabaster jar boasting an elegant, round yet stable body, with a slightly flared neck and outward rim. Alabaster was a prized material in ancient Egypt, known for its translucent quality, which allows it to emit a warm glow when backlit. Indeed, this vessel visibly glows when illuminated from within! The piece was cut from a large rock, drilled, and special tools were then used to expand the drilled areas. This initial shaping could involve handwork or the use of primitive rotary tools, such as a bow drill, to generate friction and power a rotating stone bit. Grooves encircling the interior suggest it was carved using this bow drill method or on a lathe - lathes were used in Egypt as early as about 1300 BCE. Egyptian artisans valued alabaster for its beauty and durability, often using it to create containers for precious oils, perfumes, and ceremonial items such as canopic jars for embalming. Size: 4" Diameter x 4" H (10.2 cm x 10.2 cm)
