Vietnam, Dong Son, ca. 100 BCE - 100 CE. This bronze vessel goes by many names; it is called thap in Vietnamese but western excavators named it a situla (urn or bucket) after Greek and Roman Bronze Age finds of a similar style. It has two small handles on its sides and bands of decorative geometric designs -- some of vertical hatchings and some of pointed circles connected by tangent lines. These decorative marks are found on many kinds of Dong San bronzes, including other than, drums, and weapons. The Dong Son (or Dongson, or Ðông Son) culture thrived in northern Vietnam and its burials, rich in bronze goods, demonstrate a high level of wealth relative to neighboring areas. Many of the objects that we know about came from burial goods, and we do not know how they were used -- they may have been stacked, they may have held liquids, they may have been purely ceremonial
Similar pieces are held in the Vietnam Museum of History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Musée Cernuschi (Museum of the Asian Arts in Paris). The blue patina on this piece is particularly beautiful! Size: 8 3/4" tall, 10" wide at the handles, and 8 3/4" in diameter across the top.
Provenance: Ex-private southern California collection, acquired before 2000.

- Condition: This thap has a beautiful deep blue patina; the piece is otherwise completely intact aside from a single tiny (<1/4") hole from corrosion near the base. The decorations are still clearly visible.
