Description:

Magna Graecia, Italy, Daunian, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful and sizable vessel known as a duck askos due to its plump, avian-style body as well as the upturned, forked 'tail' projecting from the verso. The bulbous vessel features a planar base, a relatively spherical body with a gently sloped shoulder, a bifurcated handle, and a wide, cylindrical spout with a flared rim. Presenting covered in cream-hued slip, the vessel is decorated with a gently oscillating band, a zigzagging band, and 2 pairs of concentric stripes around and atop the body. The top of the handle features a divergent motif reminiscent of wheat stalks, and minimalist floral motifs surround the base of the neck. Size: 7.4" W x 8.6" H (18.8 cm x 21.8 cm)
