Description:

Polynesia, Southern Cook Islands, Mangaia Island, ca. 19th century CE or earlier. A fine adze blade of a sturdy form, hand-carved from lustrous dark-gray stone. The lengthy tool features a rectangular blade head with an acute top edge, tapered ridges along the topside, and a rounded triangular tang on the bottom. An adze blade like this example would be secured within a wooden handle body for use in myriad utilitarian tasks like plowing, chopping, and cutting. Size: 2.25" W x 7.4" H (5.7 cm x 18.8 cm); 9.125" H (23.2 cm) on included custom stand.
