Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

East Asia, China, Early Zhou dynasty, ca. 1046 to 400 BCE. A fabulous leaded-bronze lid for a ding vessel with short ring handles. The handles are formed by narrow bands that are incised with shallow geometric motifs of interlocking rectangular and curvilinear lines in a pattern known as a cloud-and-thunder fret. The rest of the lid is unadorned with a small lip and shallow dome shape that is covered with a rich patina. This lid would have covered a ding vessel, a ritualistic cauldron. The ring handles were useful for handling the lid when the vessel was heated. A very handsome and well preserved example! Size: 8.25" Diameter x 1.75" H (21 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Smith collection, Alpine, California, USA since before 2000
