Description:

East Asia, China, Shang to Han Dynasty, ca. 1600 to 220 CE. A fine funerary bi disc, hand-carved from a deep green nephrite jade with a open center and a incised insect motif. The under the circular eyes are pincers pointed towards the central opening, and on the opposite end are wing cases slightly open to reveal the striped abdomen. Bi discs were placed in high-status burials, often broken or ceremonially positioned on the body, typically near the stomach or chest. Scholars believe these discs also had ritual functions during life. The carvings on this disc suggests it is from the Shang and Zhou dynasties which were often adorned with motifs. The circular form of bi discs has been interpreted as symbolizing the connection between earth and heaven, serving as a celestial guide for the deceased in their journey to the afterlife. Size: 9.5" Diameter x 0.4" W (24.1 cm x 1 cm); 11.5" H (29.2 cm) on included custom stand.
