Description:

Ancient East Asia, China, Shang Dynasty, ca. 1558 to 1046 BCE. A gorgeous example of a ritual dagger carved from mottled yellow-white stone with beige inclusions. The stocky blade features sharpened edges on either side, a prominent midrib flanked by a pair of shallow fullers, and a pointed tip. Protruding from each shoulder is a stylized oxen face with beady eyes, a broad snout, and a pair of curved horns. The cylindrical handle is carved with intricate curvilinear motifs as well as several petite perforations, and the drilled-out interior reveals button-shaped nodule in the bottom.
