Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. An ancient vessel made for holding grave offerings of wine or grain, this is a hu, a classic and stylistically rigid form of Chinese funerary vase. It stands on a flat foot, with a gently ridged body up to its shoulder. The shoulders have two small, lugged handles projecting from them. The vessel narrows significantly at its neck and then flares outward to a pronounced rim with an incised border around it. The body is glazed overall with a deep, earthy brown color. Pottery hu were made to imitate bronze vessels of the same form. The piece may have once had a lid to protect the contents within, a sign of the wealth of the deceased. Size: 5.7" W x 7.75" H (14.5 cm x 19.7 cm)
