Description:

Ancient Central / Northern Europe, Celtic Iron Age, ca. 5th to 1st century BCE. A massive forged-iron spear head of formidable form. The enormous petaloid blade exhibits sharpened edges, a crested midrib, and a sharpened tip intended for piercing through thick armor. Below the blade is a conical socketing shaft with 2 rivet holes, one of which bearing the remains of the original rivet. The Celtic people developed superior ways of forging iron and the spread of iron work throughout Europe was largely due to the expansion of Celtic culture. An iron spearhead such as this piece would have been highly valued for its strength and long reach. Size: 30.625" L x 3.125" W (77.8 cm x 7.9 cm)
