Description:

Byzantium, ca. 6th to 12th CE. A light green glass perfume flask, a strong example of a shape popular in Syria, the flask has a globular lower body with a deeply indented bottom. The neck has a bulbous lower section which seems to undulate making the glass appear to "pool" twice, and then gradually extends into an elegant, slender tube. This unusual shape would only allow minute amounts of precious, fragrant liquid to be dispensed at a time. Adding to the beauty of this piece are two long trails of dark blue (variously described as deep cobalt or deep aquamarine) glass accentuating the graceful contours of this vessel. An exquisite piece with an alluring silhouette, not to mention brilliant areas of silvery iridescence. Size: 3.5" W x 7.375" H (8.9 cm x 18.7 cm)
