Description:

Ancient Near East, Bronze Age, ca. 2000 to 1500 BCE. Attributed to the ancient eastern Iranian tribes of the Bronze Age, this is a very unusual ancient bronze battle shaft axe. We say unusual in that the blade is atypically broad yet the overall body of the axe is extremely thin as seen in the edge aspect photo above. A sharp hammer process is on the butt end which would have been just as dangerous in use as a weapon as the axe cutting edge on the opposing side. What is the purpose for such a large but lightweight axe? Could it have been employed by a female warrior for which this region was known to include? Was it meant to intimidate a frontline enemy but still be quick to wield against unarmored foes? A typology that is rare in form and function. This magnificent ancient weapon shows a beautiful deep green bronze patina with mineral deposits still retained inside the axe shaft hole. Size: 7.25" H (18.4 cm)
