Description:

Ancient Near East, modern day northern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1500 to 1000 BCE. This is a heavy cast bronze dagger with a thick rib and a decorative arch at the top of the blade. The hilt would have had an inlay, perhaps of bone, ivory, or wood, at one time. Bronze Age Luristan art was the work of nomadic herdsmen and horsemen who crafted small, portable objects, including daggers, swords, and other weapons. Weapons like this one would almost certainly have been entombed in the small rock graves in which their owners were buried; similar pieces come from the archaeological sites of Marlik and Kalar Dasht. Size: 1.95" W x 17" H (5 cm x 43.2 cm); 18.65" H (47.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Boulder, Colorado, USA collection; ex-John Piscopo
