Description:

Central Asia, Bactria-Margiana (BMAC) (Oxus Civilization), Bronze Age, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A idol figure hand-carved from a grey stone - probably chlorite or steatite – the surface incised with triangular and linear motifs that resemble a patterned robe known as a kaunakes. The body is depicted as an abstract tiered from, like steps, with a shallow depression at the top for a separately carved head made from a different material - perhaps rock crystal or limestone. The head is now absent but female based on other known museum examples with intact heads, and these have been found in the graves of women. Most excavated examples of this figure type come from sites in Margiana in southern Turkmenistan, a possible center of their production. Size: 2.5" L x 2.5" W x 2" H (6.4 cm x 6.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
