Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Bactria, ca. mid to late 3rd millennium BCE. A squat, cylindrical jar that is hand-carved from green-gray schist depicting two intriguing registers of highly stylized scorpions incised across the exterior. The insectile programs showcase each scorpion with fin-like legs protruding laterally from the ovoid abdomen, a pair of attenuated pedipalps, and a curled metasoma that terminates with a bulbous telson as well as the characteristic hypodermic aculeus. The lower row of scorpions skitter to their left beneath the right-facing upper register, and a grooved rim surrounds the top of the shallow basin. Size: 6.6" W x 4.2" H (16.8 cm x 10.7 cm)

  • Condition: Repair and restoration to a few large areas of rim and walls, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Minor softening to some scorpion details and light abrasions along base and within basin. Nice remains of scorpions across exterior.
