Description:

Ancient Near East, Anatolia, present-day Turkey, ca. 2800 to 2200 BCE. A hand-carved marble bowl of creamy white hues with slightly darker veins coursing throughout. The bowl is defined by a flat base, gradually expanding walls, and a thick rim that surrounds the shallow basin. Included are four fragments from abstract kilia stargazer idols including two marble torsos, a large marble head in the shape of a petite hand axe, and a stone head and upper body. A wonderful ensemble! Size (bowl): 6.2" Diameter x 2.5" H (15.7 cm x 6.4 cm); (largest marble torso): 1.125" L x 3.6" W (2.9 cm x 9.1 cm).

Provenance: private Dere Family Collection, acquired in the 1980s-2000s, NYC, NY.

  • Condition: Four kilia idol items are fragments from larger items. Minor nicks to bowl, otherwise intact and very good. Idol fragments have light abrasions and encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
