Description:

Ancient Near East, present-day Turkey, Anatolia, Chalcolithic Period, Bronze Age II, ca. 2700 to 2500 BCE. A fine example of a head fragment from an abstract stargazer idol known as a kilia, hand-carved from creamy white marble. The triangular head is devoid of any discernible facial features, but for a slightly raised nasal ridge. Archaeologists have interpreted these figures as female and call them "stargazers" because their heads are tilted upwards. Size: 1" L x 0.8" W (2.5 cm x 2 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Idledale, Colorado, USA collection; ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990
