Description:

Africa, Nigeria, ca. 0 to 500 CE. Superb terracotta head from this fascinating site in Nigeria. First discovered in 1928, the Nok culture existed for almost 1500 years and mysteriously vanished around 500 CE. This fine example exhibits typical features of close-cropped realistic hairdo with three small raised tufts, drilled flattened nose, eyes about half-open and mouth looking as if chanting. A very fine example! Size: 4" W x 5.5" H (10.2 cm x 14 cm); 13" H (33 cm) on included custom stand.

Oxford Thermoluminescence report N208b94, dated November 17, 2008 accompanies and states "Consistent with the suggested period of manufacture" and dated sample A as 1200 to 2000 years old.
