Description:

West Africa, Niger, Burkina Faso, Bura Asinda-Sikka culture, ca. 3rd to 13th century CE. A solid red earthenware pottery head resting upon an elongated neck, with narrow impressed eyes under incised eyebrows, elongated nasal ridge, raised ovoid lips, and protruding ears. On the verso are applied and incised lines as a coiffure, and the nodules along the neck may indicate ritualistic scarification. Little is known about this archaeological site, which was discovered and excavated only in the last few decades. It is a necropolis that was filled with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic terracotta figurines, frequently placed above inhumation-style burials; many of these burials had accompanying grave goods, and figures like this one are thought to represent individuals. Size: 8.25" L x 3.5" W (21 cm x 8.9 cm); 11.5" H (29.2 cm) on included custom stand.
