Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 500 to 330 BCE. A fine bronze basin or phiale, a special libation bowl used for holding wine, with a rounded and slightly raised central boss surrounded by concentric rings, dozens of ovoid flower petals, and an exterior wall of lattice-pattern motifs. The corseted shoulder flares outward to form the rim, and the slanted lip enables the easy sipping of the contents. Fine green and brown patina envelop the surfaces. Size: 5.4" Diameter x 1.625" H (13.7 cm x 4.1 cm).

  • Condition: Repaired from a few large pieces, with small chips and light restoration along break lines. A few stable hairline fissures, with nicks to rim, body, and basin, and light encrustations. Some surfaces possibly stabilized with conservation material. Light earthen deposits as well as fine green and brown patina throughout.
