Description:

Asia Minor, Western Anatolia, Troy, Yortan culture, Early Bronze Age, ca. 2700 to 2300 BCE. A hand-built ceramic vessel of a conical form (mastoid when vessel is turned over) made from grey-black clay with an intricately incised and partially pierced chevron pattern covering the entire form. There are three pairs of perforations at the upper end for suspension. Ancient Western Anatolia is famous for a number of large ruins, most notably Troy (Hisarlik), but many mysteries remain. The Yortan culture is known through a burial site in the valley of Bakir Cai - a site which remains understudied. However, we do know that adults and children were buried in large terracotta storage containers with a great deal of pottery like this example to accompany them in the afterlife. Size: 3.25" in diameter x 3.375" H (8.3 cm x 8.6 cm)
