Description:

Ancient Asia Minor, Western Anatolia, Troy, Yortan culture, ca. 2700 to 2300 BCE. A very sizeable wheel-thrown blackware vessel with a stable base, an inverted piriform body, a cylindrical neck with a flared rim. The shoulder is embellished with three incised striations to create wide bands. Additional interest is created by the fabulous root marks as well as the burnishing marks - wonderful traces of the potter's process. Size: 7.6" W x 10" H (19.3 cm x 25.4 cm)

Ancient Western Anatolia is famous for a number of large ruins, most notably Troy (Hisarlik), but many mysteries remain. Although we know of the Yortan culture through a burial site in the valley of Bakir Cai, this site remains understudied. This said, we do know that adults and children were buried in large terracotta storage containers with a great deal of pottery like this example to accompany them in the afterlife.
