Description:

Near East / Turkey, Anatolia, Bronze Age, ca. mid 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A wheeled terracotta model of a ram, with the wheels attached using two long bronze pins. The body of the ram is marked with deeply incised lines that give it the impression of being covered in thick wool. The head has large, curled horns and two applied discs for eyes. Animal figures in Anatolia had a long tradition - from the early Bronze Age to the Byzantine period, for example, at the site of Gordion. This example was handmade and was probably once painted. What was the meaning of this sculpture? Similar ones with wheels are known commonly as pull toys, and have been found in domestic contexts. Perhaps this was actually played with by an ancient Anatolian child! Size: 5.65" L x 3.65" W x 3.5" H (14.4 cm x 9.3 cm x 8.9 cm)
