Description:

Western Asia, Anatolia/Caspian Sea, South Caucasus region, ca. 700 to 300 BCE. A finely carved conical stamp seal made from quartzite (rock crystal), pierced for suspension. The flat seal face depicts an animal with its front hoof or paw raised, interpreted by some as a prancing horse or a lion. This duality highlights the symbolic and artistic nuances typical of the region and period. Accompanying the piece is a typewritten description signed in blue ink by "W. G. Lambert," indicating that it was examined by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert FBA (1926-2011), a renowned Assyriologist and Fellow of the British Academy specializing in Near Eastern archaeology. Lambert identifies the animal as a horse, but there are undeniable feline characteristics when impressed in soft clay. Size: 0.9" L x 0.6" W (2.3 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private London, UK collection; ex-Mayfair Gallery; ex-UK art market, 1970s - 1980s
