Anatolia, present-day Turkey, ca. 2800 to 2200 BCE. A graceful kilia head made from pale, almost translucent marble; the head and neck are trapezoidal, with a wide forehead and long, thin neck. Kilia are highly stylized female figures made throughout the Mediterranean during the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age. They are characterized by bulbous heads, long necks, and flat bodies with wide, flipper-like arms. When first made, the faces would have had painted details like eyes. Archaeologists sometimes call them "stargazers" because their heads are tilted upwards. Size: 1.95" W x 2.4" H (5 cm x 6.1 cm); 3.45" H (8.8 cm) on included custom stand.
