Description:

Ancient Near East, modern-day Turkey, Anatolia, ca. 2800 to 2200 BCE. A lovely kilia head carved from a creamy white marble. The tapering conical head presents with petite tab-shaped ears, a lengthy crested nose which terminates in a point, a pinched forehead, and a narrow neck line leading to a cylindrical neck. Kilia are highly stylized female figures made throughout the Mediterranean during the Chalcolithic period and Early Bronze Age. They are characterized by bulbous heads, long necks, and flat bodies with wide, flipper-like arms. When first made, the faces would have had painted details such as eyes. Archaeologists have interpreted these figures as female and call them "stargazers" because their heads are tilted upwards. Size: 1.45" W x 1.375" H (3.7 cm x 3.5 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.
