Description:

Eastern Greece / Asia Minor, Anatolia, Early Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A molded terracotta bust of a lovely woman, perhaps as an idol depicting Aphrodite, the goddess of love and femininity. A slender neck supports her alluring face with full lips and almond shaped eyes. Her coiffure is well-formed and almost crown-like as it caps her brow, framing her lifelike visage. A necklace around her neck rests just above her petite breasts. She is clad in a tunic, with naturalistic folds and creases down her front. She holds her arms up to her breasts and forms a pinched finger gesture, perhaps drawing a veil over her shoulders. Nice remains of white pigment dust the recessed areas and highlight her features. The verso of the statue is concave, and perhaps she rested against a flat wall of a shrine. Size: 4.5" L x 4" W (11.4 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Walter Earl collection, Anchorage, Alaska, USA, formerly property of state senator and ex-speaker of the house for Alaska, before 2000
