Native American, southwestern United States, Four Corners region, southern Colorado Plateau, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1030 to 1175 CE. A beautiful Wingate Black-on-Red bowl covered with red-orange slip and decorated within the basin with intricate and abstract geometric motifs. Five large pairs of inversely corresponding spirals coil together above a similar number of stepped pyramidal shapes that project outwards from the basin center. The discoid central area is left unadorned and creates an attractive void within the dense decorative program. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only.   • Condition: Repaired from two large pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Several stable hairline fissures resulting from breaks, with minor abrasions and fading to original pigment, and nicks to rim and exterior surfaces. Nice remains of original pigment throughout.
