Description:

Native American, southwestern United States, Pueblo I/Pueblo II period, Anasazi, ca. 875 to 1200 CE. A large grinding platform known as a "metate" and an ovoid grinding tool known as a "mano," both hand-carved from porous, beige-hued stone. The rectangular metate has a rough base for traction and a flattened grinding face which, based on the smoothness, was used countless times. Metates and manos like these examples were used for grinding corn and other substances for making foodstuffs and medicines. Size of largest (metate): 16.125" L x 9.8" W (41 cm x 24.9 cm).
