Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A lovely hand-built pottery mug with a flat base, tall walls that taper inward to a thin rim, a deep basin, and a pair of handle terminals on one side. The white-slipped surfaces provide for an attractive ground atop which silver-grey pigment is applied to form a repeating register of line-enclosed spirals. Size: 3.875" W x 2.9" H (9.8 cm x 7.4 cm).

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962

  • Condition: Repaired from a few large pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Losses to handle and areas of rim as shown. Nicks and abrasions to rim, body, handle terminals, and base, with fading to original pigmentation, light encrustations, and a couple of stable fissures. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Old museum number written in black ink beneath base.
