Description:

Southwestern USA, Colorado, Anasazi/Ancestral Puebloans, ca. 1200 to 1300 CE. A charming earthenware bowl made in the Mesa Verde Black-on-White tradition in what is today southwestern Colorado. The interior has a fantastical iconography of interlinking lines, checkers, and waves that meet in the middle at right angles. Vessels in this tradition were made from a gray or white paste with angular fragments of temper and given a pearly gray-white slip that was then overpainted with a black pigment made from carbon. The artisan who made this bowl probably lived in a cliff dwelling like those seen at Mesa Verde National Park, where houses were reached by ladders. Looking inside, you can see that the pattern painted in this bowl's interior resembles ladders leaning against one another. Size: 5.6" W x 2.95" H (14.2 cm x 7.5 cm)
