Description:

Southwestern USA, Colorado, Anasazi/Ancestral Puebloans, found near modern day Hovenweep National Monument, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful black on white elongated ceramic seed jar, with a zigzag pattern painted on its body and a small, round opening at its top center. Seed jars were originally made to protect seeds from pests and extreme temperature fluctuations. Many of these jars were broken when their owners needed to extract the seeds, making this intact example a rare find! Size: 5.6" W x 2.5" H (14.2 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962
